Kunal Shah on productivity, life hacks and how India can become a successful nation 🔥🔥

Kunal Shah on productivity, life hacks and how India can become a successful nation Kunal Shah is the founder of CRED. He is a fierce learner and has added layers of knowledge through his observation of the world and people. Here are few takeaways where he appeared on a podcast, on productivity and how India will become the superpower of the world. Try to meet more smart people to become smarter. Good people who want to learn all the time will naturally surround themselves with other people who want to learn all the time and that group compounds much faster. Our country will move forward where more people will take risks with their careers. More people taking risks with their careers will result in them creating careers for other people who don't want to take risks.  People who keep complaining about work-life balance either have a shitty life or a shitty job. Watching content, again and again, will not improve your life, taking actions will. Understand the value of time ...

How does a MRI machine work ? | The Science behind MRI

How does a MRI machine work ? | The Science behind MRI

Hey guys in this article, we'll try understanding how a MRI machine works, how does a MRI machine detects and display images of parts of our body like brain etc.,

 What is a MRI ?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, it is medical imaging technique used in radiology to create detailed images of organs and tissues inside our body.
MRI machine consists of mainly 3 components - the Magnet, Radiowaves and a Gradient. A computer is needed to display images.

Radiowaves
Magnet

Gradient

The tunnel that we see in the first image in which the patient is placed, is the magnet, that creates a strong magnetic field around the patient. The gradient (red color in the above fig) adjusts the magnetic field into smaller sections of different strengths to isolate specific body parts.

How does the MRI machine work ?

Now to understand how MRI machine functions, let's first try to understand human body.
The human body is full of water in it. Every molecule of water is made of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen, which we know it as H2O.
water molecule
So when a person is placed inside the machine, these hydrogen atoms act as tiny magnets and are very sensitive to magnetic field.
The water molecules inside us are moving randomly, but when a person is laid inside the machine in the presence of magnetic field, most of the water molecules start to move at same frequency as that of the magnetic field.
The ones that don't move along the magnetic field are called Low Energy Molecules and these are the molecules on which MRI machine wants to focus on.

Now, radiowaves are introduced through an antenna present inside the machine at a same frequency as that of a magnetic field, to pass through the person's body.
These low energy molecules will now absorb energy through these radiations, that makes low energy molecules to start moving at the same frequency as that of the magnetic field.

After a while, the machine stops sending the radiowaves and the water molecules that had just moved along the magnetic field after absorbing energy through these radiations will now release this energy and the antenna inside the machine will receive the signals sent by these molecules and is then sent to a powerful computer which uses an imaging software to translate the information into an image of an organ.

By taking images of the body in each section of magnetic field, the computer produces a final 3D image of the organ which doctors can analyze to make further diagnosis. An example of how a MRI scan looks.

Few Facts...

  • The first successful MRI scan was performed on a live human patient on July 3rd, 1977.

  • Unlike X-ray or CT scan, MRI does not use ionizing radiation. This makes MRI a popular alternative to scans that use ionizing radiations.

  • MRI was originally called NMRI (Nuclear MRI), but "nuclear" word was dropped due to negative associations.

Thinking from First Principles - The Physics framework of thinking !! 🔥

First Principles - The Physics framework of thinking!!          "The Earth is flat". This is what people thought, because they could see people, vehicles, all moving in the horizontal direction, until science came and proved it wrong. Like this, in our day to day life, we start assuming things  to be true, that we observe or what people tell us, without thinking whether it is actually true or appearing to be. So how do we know the actual fact? Can we change the way we think? YES... we need to adopt the "First Principles Thinking" method. What is First Principles Thinking?   Why should we use it?         The first time I heard this was from SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk. First principles thinking  is a kind of physics way of looking at the world. It is basically boiling things down to the fundamental truths, that you know are true and reasoning from up there. In mathematics, it is known as an axiom. Normally, what people do i...

This is why trees will help fight climate change | Analysis

This is why  trees will help fight climate change | Analysis           "TREES"-the benefits of it is a long list right from providing clean air, food and medicines to stabilizing the soil to avoid erosion, it's an important resource to human life.            In this article, we'll know how trees are going to play a huge difference in combating climate change. Why importantly trees?            Trees live in contact with many microorganisms in soil. These include fungi that trees need to survive. When trees capture carbon from the atmosphere, much of that carbon enters the soil to feed these microorganisms which in turn help in building healthy soil that supports life and stores carbon for a long time. One of the major compounds responsible for climate change is carbon-di-oxide. By increasing the green cover, more carbon-di-oxide will be captured and thereby reducing it's amount in nature and ...
